When most people think of REALTORS®, they think of buying and selling homes. While helping individuals and families achieve homeownership remains at the heart of what we do, the members of the Parkersburg Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR) have discovered that serving our communities extends far beyond real estate transactions.

Several years ago, our association began asking an important question: How can we make a greater impact in the communities we serve? What started as a desire to give back has grown into a culture of community involvement that now reaches far beyond our membership.

Today, PAAR members can be found serving quarterly meals at local homeless shelters, helping families through Angel Tree programs during the Christmas season, participating in community events, educating consumers at housing expos, supporting local races and marathons, attending Pride Fest, and organizing annual events such as our Cruise-In, Bingo Night, and Christmas Auction. Through these activities, REALTORS®, community members, and local organizations come together to support causes that make a meaningful difference throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Each year, our association helps multiple nonprofit organizations raise thousands of dollars through fundraising events, sponsorships, volunteer efforts, and community partnerships. The funds raised stay local, supporting programs and services that directly benefit our friends, neighbors, and clients. More importantly, these efforts help build relationships and trust within the communities we serve.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this journey has been watching our role within the community evolve. What began as us searching for ways to serve has transformed into community organizations reaching out to us for assistance. Local nonprofits have come to recognize that REALTORS® are not only advocates for property rights and homeownership—we are also volunteers, organizers, fundraisers, and community partners committed to making a positive impact.

The impact extends beyond dollars raised. These efforts strengthen neighborhoods, connect people with resources, and create opportunities for collaboration. They allow us to engage with residents in meaningful ways and demonstrate that our investment in the community does not end at the closing table.

As REALTORS®, we understand that strong communities create strong housing markets. More importantly, we believe that serving others is simply the right thing to do. Whether we are helping a family find a home, serving a meal, supporting a local nonprofit, participating in a community event, or educating the public about housing opportunities, our goal remains the same: to leave our communities better than we found them.

While we are proud of the work being done in the Mid-Ohio Valley, we know we are far from alone. Across West Virginia, local REALTOR® associations and their members are volunteering, fundraising, educating consumers, supporting charitable organizations, and building meaningful relationships within their communities every day. These efforts often happen quietly, without recognition, but they make a lasting impact on the people and places we serve.

Every community has unique needs, and every association has members who are passionate about making a difference. Whether the effort begins with a single volunteer project, a fundraising event, a community partnership, or a service initiative, the impact can grow far beyond what anyone initially imagines.

Together, REALTOR® associations throughout West Virginia are proving that our commitment extends well beyond real estate. We are neighbors, volunteers, advocates, and community partners. By investing our time, talents, and resources into the places we call home, we help create stronger communities, stronger relationships, and a brighter future for all West Virginians.

Because at the end of the day, REALTORS® don’t just help people find homes—we help build the communities that make those homes worth coming home to.
